The St Kilda Opera will be a highlight of the Edinburgh International Festival 2009. It was announced last night, at the launch of the Festival Programme, that the Belgian production of the opera will be performed for the first time in Scotland, in Gaelic and French, at the Edinburgh Festival Theatre on 15th, 16th and 17th August.

Serviced by Pròiseact nan Ealan (PnE) the GASD Forum originally comprised of 6 key Gaelic arts bodies – Fèisean nan Gàidheal, Gaelic Media Service (now MG ALBA), An Comunn Gàidhealach, Comhairle nan Leabhraichean, Tosg Theatre and PnE.

Gaelic Innovation Rewarded

The Western Isles were recognised for innovation at the recent UHI Business Idea Competition 2008, which was hosted by Inverness College UHI. The first ever Gaelic karaoke DVD, developed and produced by Murray International Language Centre (MILC) in partnership with Pròiseact nan Ealan (PnE), was awarded third place in the Most Innovative Idea category for the Over 26’s.
St Kilda: A European Opera returns to the stage

18 months after St Kilda: A European Opera was performed live around Europe, the project is back on the road. The Belgian production, having recently been resurrected and performed in Mons (Belgium), is set to wow audiences in Grenoble (France) later this week.

On the 24th October 2008, friends, family and colleagues of the late Simon Mackenzie will gather in Eden Court to honour the actor’s life and work. An evening of entertainment has been arranged by Pròiseact nan Ealan and Highlands and Islands Theatre Network which will give people a chance not only to remember Simon, but to celebrate his life, which ended so untimely earlier this year.

The new edition of An Leabhar Mòr, The Great Book of Gaelic, was launched by Pròiseact nan Ealan and Colmcille in Edinburgh on 29th August 2008. Published by The O’ Brien Press, the book is a major contemporary artwork that brings together the work of more than 200 visual artists, poets and calligraphers from Scotland and Ireland. Following the successful Scottish launch with MSP Mike Russell, the book will be launched in Dublin by Éamon Ó Cuív, Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs at Foras na Gaeilge on 16th September.

On the 4th September, Glasgow Science Centre played host to the inaugural Scottish Events Awards Ceremony, organised by The Drum. Amongst the 400 hopefuls who attended the event, a team of organisers and actors from St Kilda: A European Opera attended, and are delighted to announce that St Kilda was successful in the category for Best Traditional Event.

St Kilda, once known as the ‘island on the edge of the world’, is to be celebrated across Europe in a spectacular theatrical production taking place on June 22 and 23. It was announced today in Brussels that St Kilda - A European Opera, will be performed simultaneously in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany and Scotland with elements of the show transmitted by live satellite link from St Kilda. Each venue will produce and stage performances based on the same shared script, score, libretto and pre-filmed footage, but each with its own distinct interpretation.

At a time when there is an abundance of musical events in the city, with a loyal Gaelic following, TAG Theatre Company and An Lòchran (Glasgow’s Gaelic arts organisation) are offering audiences an inspiring piece of Gaelic theatre. The two day event took place in the newly refurbished City Halls and saw a wealth of Gaelic musicians descend upon the Merchant City. The outcomes of Iùl Ciùil, meaning Guiding Music, will lead the way to a Gaelic Music strategy for Scotland.
