Gaelic Pub Quiz

04 October 2006

A flock of teams, preparing to delve the depths of their minds gathered in An Lanntair round room, last night , Wednesday 4th October. A Gaelic Quiz night was the reason six teams of four people found themselves preparing to pit their wits against each other.

The atmosphere was friendly and everyone was talking together, laughing and conversing in Gaelic. Kirstie Anderson of Gaelic Arts Strategic Development, (GASD) the organiser of this gathering, put together an impressive selection of questions designed to stimulate areas of the brain never stimulated before. Whilst the atmosphere was convivial before the quiz-master, Niall-Iain MacDonald of Radio nan Gaidheal’s show Rapal began, once the quiz started the competitive nature of everyone revealed itself in all its true glory. Niall Iain’s skillful handling of the questions, his perfect timing, kept the teams under control.

Seamus Morrison of the winning team ”Amadanaich” said, “It was a really enjoyable evening, especially as we won, beating the Proiseact Nan Ealan team!”

Everyone was welcome, all levels of Gaelic were represented - from learners to native speakers in teams together. It was an ideal environment for learners to improve with no pressure, as all answers were written down in a team effort. The questions ranged from the sublime to ridiculous, raising many laughs and roars of appreciation.

The idea arose from the Comhlan Comhraidh the regular and very successful, Gaelic conversation gathering which meets in An Lanntair on Wednesday nights 8pm onwards. More and more people are coming along to it each week. The secret of that success is the non-threatening environment for people of all abilities and more importantly , the chance to have some fun while speaking Gaelic about anything and everything!

Amanda Darling from the “An Sulaire Earrantan” Team said, “I am a learner and I was a bit worried that I would not be able to understand or join in, but everyone was great and I laughed so much my sides hurt.”
