On 1st November An Lanntair played host to Stornoway's second Gaelic Pub Quiz. Held the night after Halloween there was a decidedly spooky feel to the evening as the usually immaculate crowd dragged out their fancy dress for the Halloween themed quiz. Quizmaster was the ruthless Niall Iain Macdonald who presents BBC Radio nan Gaidheal's music show, Rapal.
The quiz was held entirely in Gaelic but most teams were made up of a mixture of Gaelic and English speakers giving everyone a chance to join in and have some fun using the language. The important thing about the quiz is that everyone is welcome – it's a good place to learn but a better place to meet new people and have some fun. One participant commented, "Above all the quiz was such a laugh – that's not to say we weren't competitive though!"
The pub quizzes are led by the Gaelic conversation group, Comhlan Comhraidh – who meet in An Lanntair every Wednesday at 8pm. Its an informal setting and gives everyone a chance to use and practise their Gaelic. The night sees a mix of fluent speakers, learners and even some with absolutely no Gaelic – although they always leave with a few words.
The next Gaelic pub quiz will be held after the New Year, but in the meantime Comhlan Comhraidh meet each Wednesday in the round room next to the bar.
