Weaving professional and community performances, “There’s No V in Gaelic” will be a ground breaking event celebrating the voices of Gaelic women and the rich and diverse possibilities of Gaelic Arts.
This production is the culmination of a very special project, working with Gaelic speaking women. Alongside a group of first-time actors! , “ There’s No V in Gaelic” will feature three prominent Gaelic performers, Cathy Ann MacPhee, Kathleen MacInnes and Margaret Bennett.
These leading Gaelic women have been working with professional Gaelic playwright, Seonag Monk, who has written a theatrical piece, which was partly devised by the company and An Lòchran and will be directed by TAG’s Artistic Director, Guy Hollands. Guy said:
"TAG is very pleased to be a central part of this important new performance project in partnership with An Lòchran. This is a first for both TAG and the Citizens’ Theatre and it is shaping up to be a fresh and funny evening of new voices from the Gaelic world and an absorbing mix of first-time and experienced actors." (Guy Hollands)
Cathy Ann MacPhee is an acclaimed Gaelic performer. This will be will be Cathy Ann’s first acting appearance in roughly 18 years – since appearing in Whiskey Galore with Jimmy Logan in the Mitchell Theatre, Glasgow. Kathleen MacInnes, described as an “o! utstanding Gaelic voice ”, was recently named Gaelic singer of the year in the Scots Traditional Music Awards. She has also worked as an actress and presenter on TV programmes and with Tosg Theatre Company. Margaret Bennett, a singer, writer, broadcaster and storyteller, is also hailed as one of the world's foremost authorities on Scottish Folklore.
TAG and An Lòchran have also brought together Gaelic speaking young women aged 16-25 years, in a series of workshops throughout the autumn to explore and create dramatic monologues, led by drama professional Elly Goodman and Gaelic writer Catriona Lexy Campbell. The results are a revealing and fascinating collection of dramatic monologues which will be performed by the young women. These monologues will be presented in tandem with the professional performance at the Citizens’.
