Land struggle Cairns

Remembering our History

Working closely with Caimhneachan ann Gaisgeach the Gaelic Arts Agency supported the development of three Cairns on Lewis to commemorate the Highland Land Struggle.

A cairn at Aignish on Point, Gress in Back and Pairc in Lochs were designed by Will Maclean. The opening of each of the cairns proved to be a major community event supported by other media. Local publisher Acair Books published a book by Joni Buchannan on the subject and the community events associated with the opening included songs, psalms, music and drama.

The cairns have received several awards including the Supreme Award for Environmental Regeneration from Scottish Natural Heritage and Scottish Enterprise.
